Watershed Area: Digging a pond and hoping it will fill up usually will not work. Practically all ponds in this area depend on surface runoff for a water supply. Ideally a one acre pond should have 6 to 20 acres of watershed to maintain a full pond. If the watershed is too small the pond may not fill up or may not stay full during extended dry periods. If the watershed is larger than necessary a larger or more complex spillway structure may be required to allow the excess water to flow through the pond. This will also shorten the useful life of the pond as the sediment and debris from this excess water tends to stay in the pond. Back to Ponds Page or the Preble SWCD Home Page |
