Pond Soils: Soils ultimately determine whether a pond holds water or if it leaks. Soil surveys can provide useful information to evaluate soils, however, knowledge of the soil profile to a much greater depth is necessary. Test holes should be dug in the pond reservoir and embankment areas to a depth of 2' below the proposed bottom level of the pond. Sand or gravel encountered while digging test holes may indicate soils that are not suitable for a pond or that will require a major expenditure to overcome the limitations. Ideally you will encounter soils with a high clay content that compact well. Those type of soils provide a good seal and usually result in a pond that does not leak.
